April 17, 2000:
Columbine Memorial Committee Unveils
Draft Vision Statement to the Public

The Columbine High School Memorial Committee, today unveiled the draft vision
statement and siting criteria for the permanent memorial to honor the victims
of the April 20, 1999 Columbine tragedy. The Memorial Committee has recently
conducted a series of meetings with the victims' families, those injured, and
the Columbine faculty, staff and students. This forum was conducted at the
request of the Memorial Committee to extend an opportunity to all in the
Columbine Community to review progress and offer comment on their efforts to
date.

The public forum took place at the Trinity Christian Center and included an
exhibit of display panels that illustrated draft project schedule, vision
statement, site selection criteria, and analysis of suggested locations for
the memorial. The Memorial Committee is expected to announce a final location
for the memorial shortly after adoption of the vision statement and site
selection criteria on April 24th.

Design of the memorial will take place during the next several months by the
Design Team of: Bob Smith and David Carpenter, landscape architects from DHM
Design in Denver, and Paul Morris, a landscape architect, and Tad Savinar, an
artist - both from Portland. The design team will be working with the
victims' families, faculty, staff and students of the high school and
Memorial Committee to create three design alternatives for the memorial with
selection and presentation of a preferred design to the public in July.

The memorial will commence construction later this fall and be completed for
dedication by April of 2001.

Planning Pyramid The pyramid to the left consists of
four tiers. The top tier Includes
the victims' families. The middle
tiers include the injured students,
staff, faculty, and their families.
The bottom includes the Memorial
Committee, and the community. The
decision-making process follows the
pyramid to develop tentative
decisions and loops back through
for a final decision. The process
allows for time to 'sleep on'
tentative decisions and make
changes before final decisions are
made. The process does not exceed
30 days, the time between
committee meetings.
